Who Needs a Business Licence?

Any person or business advertising or conducting business in Canmore is required by Town Bylaw to hold a valid business registry licence.

“Business" is defined as:

  1. a commercial, merchandising, marketing  or industrial  activity or undertaking;
  2. a profession, trade, occupation, calling or employment; or
  3. an activity providing goods or services,
  4. whether or not for profit and however organized or formed, including a co-operative or association of persons.

“Carry On Business" is defined as operate, perform, keep, hold, occupy, deal in or use, for gain, whether as principal or agent.

Why Apply For a Business Licence?

A valid business registry licence ensures that all businesses and their premises comply with relevant town bylaws for the safety of the public and to minimize nuisances and misleading business practices.

For Resident “commercial" businesses within the Town of Canmore, this initially involves compliance with the Land Use Bylaw requirements. Businesses moving to Canmore are encouraged to contact the Town of Canmore Planning and Development Department to verify compliance with the Land Use Bylaw prior to entering into purchase or lease agreements for a commercial business location.

When is a New Business Licence Required?
A business registry licence is required when a business starts up, changes ownership, relocates, opens other locations or works in the Town of Canmore on a temporary basis. Hawkers, Peddlers and Door to Door sales included.
Types of Business Registry Licences
There are generally six types of business registry licences –
  1. Resident
  2. Home Occupation 1
  3. Home Occupation 2
  4. Non Resident
  5. Regional
  6. Bed & Breakfast
Resident businesses have a permanent commercial location in Canmore. These businesses operate from offices, retail locations, warehouses, and manufacturing facilities.

Home Occupation 1 requires a one time permit through the Planning and Development Department. This is a prerequisite before a business registry licence may be issued.

Home Occupation 2 requires a annually renewed permit through the Planning and Development Department. This is a prerequisite before a business registry licence may be issued.

Non-resident businesses operate in Canmore on a temporary basis. These businesses may include building trades contractors, security companies or businesses that have no fixed business location in Canmore.

Regional is a business with the civic address within the M. D. of Bighorn - Harvie Heights, Dead Man’s Flats, Lac des Arcs or Exshaw.

Bed & Breakfast is similar to a home occupation. A yearly Bed & Breakfast Permit is required by the Planning and Development Department as a prerequisite before a business registry licence may be issued.
How Do I Apply For a Business Licence?

In person business registry licence applications and fees are accepted at the Town of Canmore Civic Center front desk. Applications can also be submitted by email, fax, and mail.  In these cases the Business Registry Licence Coordinator will contact the applicant regarding the application, the business classification and the fees.

When compliance with the Land Use Bylaw is confirmed, business registry licence application and fees will be accepted. The application process may also require a lease agreement and approval from the Planning and Development Department. The business may also require approval from Environmental Services, AMVIC, Calgary Health Authority or the RCMP depending on the nature of the business.

Fees

Business Registry Licence fees may be paid using cash, cheque, Interac, master card or visa. The first year fee for a business registry licence application may be pro-rated depending on the date that the application is accepted. The pro-rate date is July 1 of each calendar year. Business registry licences are renewed annually on January 1 through renewal invoices mailed out in early December (except for Home Occupations 2’s).

When you are a classified as a Home Occupation 2 by the Planning and Development Department you will renew your business registry licence the same date as your Home Occupation Permit renewal date. If you have a three year renewal date for your Home Occupation 2 permit you will be invoiced annually on the month of the original application date.  If you applied in November you will be invoiced every November and the payment will be due the last day of that month. November inovices will be due November 30th, July invoices will be due July 31st and so on.
