Bow Valley Transit Initiative

The Municipalities of Canmore and Banff and Improvement District #9 are working with private sector representatives, provincial government representatives, the three ski areas, transportation providers, Parks Canada, environmentalists, and the regional accommodation sector to create a Bow Valley Regional Transit Services Commission (BVRTSC).

The purpose of the Commission would be to enhance existing transit services and introduce new transit services to improve mobility and the experience of residents and tourists in living in and enjoying these municipalities and Banff National Park.

The potential transit service improvements in the Banff / Canmore / Lake Louise area for the next five years might include:
improved services to the three ski areas
regular transit service connecting Canmore and Banff
extensions of the Canmore – Banff regional service by connecting it to Lake Louise
enhancements to the local transit service in Banff
introduction of local transit service in Canmore
transit service to some popular camping and hiking destinations in Bow Valley

The Steering Committee is currently preparing an application for the consideration of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs in the fall of 2009. If approved, there could be a possible startup of the BVRTSC in the summer or fall of 2010.

The vision for future transit services in Bow Valley is to build on the excellent transit service in the Town of Banff and the analysis and reviews that have been conducted to date by the Town of Canmore.

AECOM is coordinating the work of this multi-part group for this initiative. For more information, please contact:
